The Living Wage Foundation has announced that its voluntary UK real Living Wage has risen by £1.00 per hour from £9.90 to £10.90 per hour, the largest year-on-year rise since it took effect 11 years ago. Its London real Living Wage has risen by 90p per hour from £11.05 to £11.95 per hour. Over 390,000 UK workers working for over 11,000 accredited real Living Wage employers will now receive a pay rise as a result. Where employers have agreed to pay the real Living Wage, it applies to their workers aged 18 and over.
The real Living Wage is calculated independently and is normally updated by the Living Wage Foundation annually each November, but this year’s rate announcement has been brought forward in recognition of the sharp increase in living costs over the past year. It’s calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and London, based on a basket of household goods and services, and it’s separate from the statutory national living and national minimum wage.
Accredited real Living Wage employers should now implement the pay rise as soon as possible but by 14 May 2023 at the latest.
