The annual increases to the national minimum wage (NMW) and national living wage (NLW) are normally announced by the Chancellor in the Budget. However, as a consequence both of the 2019 Budget being postponed and the forthcoming December 2019 general election, it is likely that the next round of NMW and NLW increases, due to take effect from 1 April 2020, will not now be announced by the government until January 2020.

The Low Pay Commission (LPC), which is the independent body that advises the government on the levels of the NMW and NLW, is shortly expected to publish its recommendations on the rates to apply from April 2020, following its consultation earlier this year. The government is not bound to follow the LPC’s recommendations, but it invariably does so.
