Landfill tax was introduced to encourage efforts to minimise the amount of waste produced in the UK and to encourage the use of non-landfill waste management options such as recycling, composting and recovery. The standard rates of Landfill Tax in England and Northern Ireland have been updated for 2020-21.

The standard rate of Landfill Tax in England and Northern Ireland is currently £94.15 per tonne and will increase to £96.70 per tonne in 2021-22. Certain inert waste (such as bricks) is taxed at a lower rate of £3.00, increasing to £3.10 per tonne from 1 April 2021.

The Scottish Landfill Tax replaced Landfill Tax in Scotland from 1 April 2015 and the Welsh Landfill Tax replaced Landfill Tax in Wales from 1 April 2018. The respective rates in Scotland and Wales currently mirror the Landfill Tax rates in England and Northern Ireland.
