There are special rules that govern how official custom’s seals are used and how to recognize them and also how authorised traders can use their own seals in place of official custom’s seals.

HMRC has recently updated the applicable Notice 205 entitled Official Customs seals and trader sealing. The notice cancels and replaces the previous version and is relevant to any businesses whose work involves the use and inspection of seals applied
for customs purposes as well as businesses who wish to use their own seals in place of official seals. The notice has been updated to advise of new seals that meet customs requirements.

The notice includes the following main sections:

• Official customs seals
• Trader sealing
• Seals acceptable to HMRC as at 20 July 2018.
