524 employers have been named and shamed in a government press release for failing to pay nearly £16 million to over 172,000 workers in breach of the national minimum wage (NMW) legislation. The employers on the list have since paid back what they owed, and they have also faced financial penalties of up to 200% of their underpayment. The employers named include major high street brands such as Easyjet, Greggs and Estee Lauder.

In the press release, the government makes the point that whilst not all NMW underpayments are intentional, anyone entitled to be paid the NMW should receive it and robust enforcement action will be taken against employers who do not pay their staff correctly.

The press release also includes an educational bulletin which focuses on salary sacrifice arrangements.
