The government has published a series of more than 30 tax updates, consultations and documents that are expected to strengthen policymaking and modernise UK tax system. The raft of documents would usually have been published at Budget time but were instead published as part of the ‘Tax policies and consultations update (Spring 2021)’ allowing more time for scrutiny from stakeholders. The documents were published on 23 March 2021 in what has become known as ‘tax day’.
The measures include a number of announcements on the next steps in delivering the government’s 10-year tax administration strategy and will take forward policy development across a range of important tax issues, including business rates and environmental taxes, as well as a range of simplification measures.
There is also a consultation on potential changes to Air Passenger Duty that could improve connections across the Union and regions by cutting the tax on domestic flights.
Other measures announced by the government includes plans to tighten tax rules for second property owners in England meaning they can only register for business rates if their properties are genuine holiday lets.
