The government has confirmed that it has started to send emails to select individuals with biometric residence permits (BRPs), inviting them to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account to access their eVisa. This is a digital proof of their immigration status. Invitations will be issued in phases before the process opens to all BRP holders in summer 2024. As part of the government’s plan to introduce a digital immigration system, it is intended that physical immigration documents will be gradually phased out by 2025. Most BRPs expire on 31 December 2024. eVisas are already used under the EU Settlement Scheme.

The government has also published updated guidance on eVisas and online immigration status.
